Parodeities on CD (well, MP3, anyway)
One problem with just writing parodies of songs is that it's difficult to communicate exactly how the words are sung via text on some web page. Without an actual performance of the parody, the audience often misses the nuances present in the parody (if they follow the parody at all). I discovered early on that most people couldn't really appreciate a Parodeity without actually listening to the tune. Not being a musician or singer myself, I originally tried to find someone to perform these parodies so I could post recordings on Webster. However, recording this music is a lot of work and expecting someone else do that that work, gratis, was expecting a bit too much. So I broke down and recorded these tunes myself. Remember, these recordings appear here just as a tool for letting you hear how the parody should sound. Don't expect professional level recordings.

I have received several complaints about the fidelity of these songs. My apologies: originally I'd encoded these songs in MP3 format at a 16Kbps rate (very low quality). After several complaints about the quality, I bumped the encoding up to 32 Kbps. As good or as bad as the original performance may be, these low data rate recordings are going to produce a very poor quality result. I use this low data rate for two reasons: space and speed. A typical CD-Quality recording requires about 25 megabytes for a single stereo song file. A decent MP3 encoding of one of these songs is going to take around 5 megabytes. At the compression levels I'm using, I've squeezed a typical song down to between 300Kbytes and one megabyte. This reduces the file storage requirements on Webster and it speeds up download times by an order of magnitude. Unfortunately, that encoding also destroys whatever quality was present in the original recording.

If you're really dying to hear a high-quality recording of these Parodeities, I'd be more than happy to send you a CD if you'll provide a postage-paid mailer for the CD. Email me to get the mailing address information ( no, I'm not going to post my mailing address here...). As I'm writing this, I'm currently re-recording and re-mixing each of the Volumes in the Parodeities series to improve the quality; I still won't guarantee "record company" quality here, but the stuff has been steadily improving. Volumes I, II, III, IV, V, VIII, IX, and X are currently done and I'm more than happy to share them with those who'd like a copy. As I redo other volumes, I'll add those to the list of CDs I'm willing to produce for people. As long as I don't get overwhelmed with requests (unlikely), I'm more than happy to do this for you if you'll cover the shipping costs (the CD, jewel box, label, and insert cost me about $0.30 when I take advantage of CD-R rebates at the local Office Depot; it's hardly worth trying to recover those costs; shipping is the real cost involved here).
