Righteous Pop Music Reviews:
RPM Volume V

[Christian Resources] [WEBster Home]
Disclaimer: If you don't like Christian Parodies of Rock music, you won't like Mark Bradford. That being the case, why waste your time reading this stuff? It would be much better for you to go praise the Lord in a way that is acceptable to you rather than get all caught up in the emotions associated with this subject.

He Loves You

Lyrics: good
Music: good
Vocals: good
Production:
Faithful to original song: 8

Comments: While not as energetic as the original Beatles' tune, this is a good cover of the song. The lead vocals aren't quite as strong as they need to be on the "yeah, yeah, yeah" but otherwise this is an excellent performance. Of course, the lyrics are about as meaningful as those in the original song (translation: they're weak), but Mark's lyrics are true to the original song and that's what makes this parody work.

Believe

Lyrics: good
Music: good
Vocals: good to excellent
Production: good
Faithful to original song: N/A

Comments: Okay, I don't remember the original Cher song well enough to compare this one against the original, but I really do like this tune (even though it's borderline disco, gasp). The vocals are good on this one.

I Want it God's Way

Lyrics: good
Music: good
Vocals: fair to good
Production: good
Faithful to original song: 7

Comments: Well, if you can't sing as high as the "Backstreet Boys" you can always transpose. No complaint from me (I do the same thing when I use "There is But One Way" with the kids where I've worked). Still, after having heard ApologetiX' "I Want in That Place" this version isn't up to the same standards. The vocals are actually good on this track; I rated them "fair to good" simply because of the key change used to avoid a "difficult to sing track." Of course, you can always listen to my version and then tell me "Who are *you* to complain about Mark Bradford?"

Turning Christianese

Lyrics: good to excellent
Music: good
Vocals: good
Production: good
Faithful to original song: N/A

Comments: Okay, I missed "Turning Japanese" but this song is great all on its own. One of the songs that justifies the purchase of this CD. Here's another true parody that will have you busting up while listening to the song.

The Way He Loves Me

Lyrics: good
Music: good
Vocals: good
Production: good
Faithful to original song: N/A

Comments: Although I've heard the original song, it's been a while and I'm not real familiar with it so I can't compare this one with the original. Sounds close enough through dim memories, but I still won't try to compare it to the original. The performance good on this track. If you're a Faith Hill fan, you'll probably like this tune even if it's not totally true to the original.

I Still Haven't Got What I'm Praying For

Lyrics: good to excellent
Music: good
Vocals: good
Production: good
Faithful to original song: 9

Comments: U2 fans will dig this one. One of the better covers Mark Bradford does. Great lyrical/parodical treatment of this subject; absolutely hilarious.

Raindrops Keep Falling on My Boat

Lyrics: excellent
Music: excellent
Vocals: good to excellent
Production: good
Faithful to original song: 8

Comments: Okay, I must admit that I have a weakness for Noah songs. It's hard to do a bad Noah parody. Personal biases aside, this song is great. Buy the CD for this one. If you're a B.J. Thomas fan, you'll have to get this one. Great song to play for kids in a Sunday School class too.

All Prayed Up

Lyrics: good
Music: excellent
Vocals: good to excellent
Production: good
Faithful to original song: 8

Comments: In other reviews I've really blasted Mark's band for their Elvis parodies. They actually do a decent job on this one. The lyrics could be stronger, but the vocals are just as good as any decent Elvis impersonator.

Wake Up Lazy Christian

Lyrics: fair to good
Music: good
Vocals: good to excellent
Production: good
Faithful to original song: 8

Comments: This is a good performance; it sounds just like the Everly Brothers. The lyrics just don't work for me as well as they ought to. Can't explain it; it seems that I should like this song, but the parody is lost on me.

Take My Sins Away

Lyrics: good
Music: excellent
Vocals: good to excellent
Production: good
Faithful to original song: 9

Comments: Hey, if you liked the original Berlin tune (from "Top Gun") you're gonna love this one. Excellent performance and good lyrics.
