There is no such thing as "Christian Music" Only Christian lyrics. This site is dedicated to giving a lot of songs the lyrics God originally intended for them.

What is a Parodeity?

The term "Parodeity" is the obvious merging of the two words "parody" and "deity" to imply a Christian-based parody of some song. Although parodies are usually humorous or satirical, Parodeities generally are not; they are simply lyrics that tell a Bible story or some personal testimony by attaching new lyrics to an existing song. Most of the Parodeities on this page were written to the tunes of classic rock songs, although other genres are present as well.

Why Parodeities?

Parodeities are a neat way to share the gospel message. Although there is no shortage of modern Christian music suitable for all tastes, parodeities provide a way to share the Good News using tunes people already enjoy. We use many of the songs appearing here in Pathway's Children's programs; this works out well for us because (1) the kids are already familiar with many of the tunes, (2) we get to pick tunes that have proven themselves to be popular, (3) the parents now recognize the tunes their kids are singing!

One might question if a staunch non-believer is going to accept the Gospel Message because someone has rewritten the lyrics to one of their favorite songs (more likely, they'll just poke fun at the "idiotic" Christian who does this). Reaching people in this manner certainly isn't the focus of the parodies appearing here. Instead, these tunes are intended for use with Children's and Youth programs as a tool for keeping them interested in Christian music. Parodeities attempt this by using music that kids can relate with. It's really sad to see today's kids grow up an church and develop a distaste for Christian music because they feel that "Christian Music" equals "Kiddie Music." Hopefully, Parodeities can help some kids to realize that not all "intended for youth" Christian music has to be traditional tunes like "Jesus Loves Me" that they're embarrassed to sing by the time they're in fourth grade. Furthermore, Parodeities give these kids some witnessing power since they can discuss the Parodeity lyrics with the friends at school.

Of course, it helps if you're about 40 ('cause then you'll know most of these songs)! Still, the concept of Parodeities applies to new music as well as old and to different genres than just those that appear here. If any of these songs amuse you, you should feel encouraged to write some parodeities of your own. Just be sure to share them when everyone when you've written them!

New! All the Parodeities in book format!

Information About the Parodies:

Titles contain links to the lyrics.

Of course, when reading the lyrics to one of these songs, it helps to listen to the melody of the song. For this reason I've recorded some MP3 files to help to "visualize" with the song. These MP3 files were encoded at 16 Kb/s in order to reduce download times. The fidelity is less than desirable, however. Therefore, you will probably want to download an appropriate MIDI file to play while reading these lyrics. MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) files are small files (unlike MP3 and other audio formats) that tell a synthesizer how to play a song. You don't actually need synthesizer hardware because most modern operating systems (e.g., Mac and Windows) include software that will play a MIDI file for you.

To locate MIDI files on the net is relatively easy. There are literally dozens of search engines that will locate a MIDI file for a song by title, artist, filename, and other criteria.

You should also try searching for MIDI sites using AltaVista, Googel, or another Internet search engine. Usually the keyword "MIDI" should be enough to keep you busy chasing down links for several days.

Quality of the MIDI files varies considerably. Some people knock off a song in a "quick and dirty" fashion while others put considerable effort into their sequencing (MIDI programming). You will probably want to listen to two or three variants before settling on a particular MIDI file. It's a good idea to locate a MIDI file that is as similar as possible to the MP3 files provided with these parodeities.

Please keep in mind that many excellent MIDI files available on the Internet have been pirated from Karaoke systems and the posters do not have the rights to distribute the files, nor do you have the right to download such files. If you have any questions about the copyright associated with such files you should contact the author of the site where you've found the file. If you don't get a response, you can probably assume that the site does not have appropriate permission to distribute the file.

If you decide that you like these parodeities, be sure to check out the following links. This isn't the only site with "Christianized" Secular music. If you like this site, you'll probably like those at the following link, as well:

Unlike "Weird Al" and ApologetiX, I don't make a living writing and selling parodies. So if you've got a suggestion to improve one of my parodies, feel free to send it my way. The truth be known, only a few of my parodies have gone through more than one or two stages of rewrite (more than that is necessary for any good poetry) and, undoubtedly, there are better or more clever ways of saying things than I've used in many of my parodies. If you can think of a better line for one of my songs, pass it along! Do keep in mind that I consider all submissions and corrections to be public domain material - if you send it to me and I decide to incorporate it into a song, I'm going to release the result to the public domain. If you have a problem with this, please make the corrections on your own, publish the new lyrics on your web site (or through some other medium) and attach the appropriate copyright; you can send me the URL with the new (copyrighted) version, but don't send me the text directly since I will assume that I can publish it as public domain material.

I have placed these songs in the Public Domain and you may use them as you see fit. Parodies of songs do not violate copyright laws, so you may use these lyrics without fear of violating any laws. Note that this copyright release does not apply to the original music that these lyrics were written for. You will need to contact the original publisher if you intend to use this copyrighted material in a way that might violate international copyright law.

From an ethical (rather than legal) point of view, I also want you to understand that you are free to do with these lyrics as you choose. As noted elsewhere, I personally feel that God has helped me tremendously when writing these, so I feel they belong to Him rather than me. So feel free to use these lyrics any way you choose (I would hope, though I can't enforce this, that you use these Parodeities to glorify God); you needn't worry about attribution or any other issues. If you want to modify these songs and claim the result as your own, feel free to do so (sure, I'd be tickled if you mentioned my name in the credits, but I won't feel bad if you choose not to do so; these lyrics were created to glorify God, not glorify me).

If you use any of these lyrics (e.g., record them, sing them in a youth group, or publish them somewhere) let me know and I'll put a brief mention of your usage on this site.

Note that this release does not apply to the lyrics contained within the "Not Invented Here" section. The copyrights on those lyrics rest with their original authors; please contact the author for appropriate copyright clearance if you wish to use one of those songs.

Thanks,
Randy Hyde
