Ron Perry
Sanctified Oldies

[Christian Resources] [WEBster Home]
Ron Perry is another musician who writes and performs Christian parodies of secular tunes. Ron specializes in oldies tunes (for those of you who think oldies means anything before last year, I should point out that Ron does parodies of songs from the 50's and 60's for the most part).

The styles of all the Christian parodists featured here on Webster vary greatly, but Ron's style is probably the farthest away in the pack. Parodists like J. Jackson (ApologetiX), Mark Bradford, and Nick Alexander generally borrow the tune and little else. On occasion, these lyricists will take a phrase or line from the original song if it fits in the story they're trying to tell. Ron Perry, on the other hand, generally chooses songs that communicate most of his message already and then he makes minor changes to the lyrics in order to "sanctify" the song. By choosing appropriate songs to begin with, Ron does not compromise the message he's trying to present, but at the same time he preserves much of what made the original song popular. The decisions concerning what to replace and what to leave in the original song is an art form in and of itself. Ron strikes a good balance in his choice of lyrical changes.

Ron's performance and vocal style is quite reminiscent of a typical lounge singer. If you're expecting an exact replication (sans lyrics) of the original songs, you'll probably be disappointed. On the other hand, Ron has a strong, good, voice, so if you listen to the songs on their own rather than comparing him at every moment against the original, you'll be happy with the result.

Ron doesn't seem to have a web page dedicated to his music, but you can order his CDs from ChristianBooks.com
